The 14th Amendment granted citizenship status to anyone born in the United States. This amendment would instantly grant citizenship status to African Americans who were slaves. The due process clause of the 14th Amendment also states that states cannot take away legal rights from any citizens.

This amendment is extremely important in regards to civil rights, since it granted many slaves citizenship.
