    Explanation:

    Total institution can be defined as a place of work or living area whereby a substancial number of individuals are cut off from the community thereby living within thier enclosed space. This approach is usually done inorder to control the group of people and are under special rules and laws when compared to the overall community whereby they are found.

    An example of a total institution is the Prison whereby the inmates are protected from the outside community. There are special rules which the inmates are expected to obey which is quite distinct from the community in which they are found in.
