During the Civil War, women in the South were left behind to tend to farms and plantations while the men went off to war. They were also forced to deal with significant supply shortages of clothes and food. Many children served in the war as soldiers or drummer boys, and many were left without fathers or with fathers whose ability to earn a living was hampered from injuries sustained in the war. African-Americans in the South were displaced following the war and endured racial discrimination and the same shortage of basic supplies that impacted the entire state.
