In most ancient/modern societies, an educated individual will have better social standing. By sending Renni to school to learn a trade or read and write, his parents are securing a lifestyle for him, and trying to give him a higher social standing/order than a farmer. He could go on to be a merchant if he learns a trade, or, he can use his skills in reading and writing for other work.
