Andrew Jackson is a controversial, albeit remarkable figure in U. S. history. On one hand, he mistreated Native Americans and authorized the Indian Removal Act, but at the same time started the modern Democratic Party as we know it. He was the first U. S. President to come from humble beginnings: he was not born into an aristocratic family like George Washington or Thomas Jefferson. Jackson was a man of the people, for the people. For these reasons he is regarded as a president for the ''common man.
