We can easily notice the theme that one's background often has an impact on one's beliefs in this part of the excerpt " ... they couldn't begin to comprehend my feelings and my dreams. this isn't because they're insensitive, you understand, but because they didn't grow up here."

We can see that the narrator knows that because his parents grew up in India where they were taught their kids should go to an important college and get a degree, they cannot get what the kid really wants. And he does not blame them, he is aware that this is due to they are not capable of assimilate his music dreams as a reality just because they were not raise in that kind of environment.
