What were the reasons for disunity amongst Indians during the early British period

The early British period was marked by great disunity amongst Indians, such as:

Lack of common interest. Inequality and prejudice based on cultural differences (caste, creed, race), that created a barrier between them. Conflicts and wars to acquire larger territories provoked divisions among them.
