In response to South Carolina's nullification, President Andrew Jackson put forth "the Nullification Proclamation (1832) ". This Proclamation argues that it was not within any state's right to refuse to enforce a federal law. Congress then declared through "the Force Act", the use of military force against any state that resisted the tariff acts that South Carolina wanted to nullify.
