    The military tactic was known as trench warfare and if was gruesome and horrible. To end a stalemate in one of these battle one side would have to try and attack the other. This resulted in mass casualty. The people who would attack would be killed getting mowed down by machine guns. This is why there was a stalemate either side did not want to get mowed down and lose.
