The word "whig" was selected to represent the American Whigs of 1776 who fought for freedom. The term "whig" stood for opposing tyranny. Unlike the democrats that stood for the sovereignty of the people, whigs supported the rule of law, written and unchanging constitutions and also the protection of the interests and rights even of the minorities against major tyranny. The Whig Party is being organized by Henry Clay of the National Republicans. The Whigs come from the northeast and in simple terms supported government actual actions as a way of improving the society.
