    When the Nationalists were defeated by the Communists, the United States continued to support the Nationalists when they settled into Taiwan by providing them with weapons and supplies to defend themselves from the Communists. The U. S. also began strengthening Japan economically and built bases near Okinawa to ensure as deterrent to Communist threats.
