    The automobile. The elevated train and transcontinental railroad are both limited in where they can go, and aren't really individual. The horse-drawn trolley is limited in where it can go and how quickly. A personal automobile, on the other hand, can go wherever there's a road; where it goes is entirely up to the driver.
