Why did Athens need to trade with other city states and colonies

    The reason was that Athens itself was only a city state and did not produce enough of everything the people needed to steadily and normally survive throughout the year. However, because they produced a surplus of certain goods, they were able to trade these goods in exchange for other goods that the other city states (Sparta for example) produced.

    Through this, they could have a steady trade with each other.
