Diseases played a very important role in encounters between Native groups and the first British settlers, because many British settlers brought diseases which the Native groups did not have any immunity against. This largely wiped out the Native groups, meaning that their population was basically halved and the white settlers who had previously been the smaller group began to outnumber the indigenous groups.
