Spain had lost some of its colonies to other European countries but also gained some. These new colonies, along with the ones remaining, were called New Spain. All leaders of the colony were based in Mexico City. The city was considered to be the capital city and it here that the Viseroyalty and the Catholic Church's main officials reside. Most elite family also stayed here. This position made it easier for them to access the port in Veracruz and galleon trading was made more convenient from the islands in the Pacific to Veracruz.
