The Umayyads did not actually unite many lands but they sent out their armies to capture as much land as possible. The people owning those lands did not resisit and accepted them as their ruler. This way they united the lands and the people of the Muslim empire. The tern unite or union means equal rights for all citizens living within an empire. the Umayyads did not follow this rule in any way and ultimately the empire fell after a 100 years. The main reason behind the falling of the empire was internal fighting and rebelling by people living within the empire.
