After the death of Charlemagne in 814, his kingdom got split between his two sons. One of the son got hold of West Franks that came to be known as France and the other son got hold of East Franks that came to be known as Germany. This did not stop the fighting between the two sons, as there was a buffer state in between. This war continued for a long time of 1000 years. At this time the Vikings started invading and they started settling in Normandy by the 10th century. The nobles were also starting their uprising. These facts needed for order to face such difficult times.
