    A major purpose of Act IV of The Tragedy of Macbeth is to foreshadow events related to Lady Macbeth's fate (A). Act IV opens with Macbeth visiting the three witches. He asked them to explain their prophecies. They do and, as a result, Macbeth decides that Macduff and his family need to be killed because they are a threat to him and will attempt to overthrow him. The rest of the act describes how Macbeth sends killers to kill Macduff and his family.
