Seditious speech targets the overthrow of the government of the day. This form of speech directly attacks government leaders and the institutions of government. It encourages the uprising or rebellion against the government. It is a criminal offense to practice seditious speech. Seditious speech can be both written and oral. The Sedition Act of 1798 was enacted to prevent the newspapers of the day from openly criticizing the government or its actions. It is interesting to note that the Sedition act is very similar to the act preventing espionage.
