What did Randolph mean when he wrote "shake it to its foundations"?

    Edmund Randolph was the first Attorney General and the second Secretary of State, serving under the Washington administration in the late 1700s. When he wrote ‘shake it to its foundations’ he meant ‘damage or challenge the core beliefs or ideals’.
