The African Americans were always looked at as slaves or people who were not as equal to lighter skinned people. In history, there have been records of many unjustly things that have happened. Back in the 20th century, African Americans had separate communities, schools, restaurants, jobs, and etc. They were simply discriminated just because of the color of their skin.
