The preamble to the Declaration of Independence refers to natural rights (albeit by using different terms). What are natural rights?

    Natural rights are those which all humans possess and that cannot be taken or given away. According to philosopher John Locke, these include ‘life, liberty and property’. When drafting the Constitution, Jefferson included the natural rights to be ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’.
