The militias that defeated a detachment under General John Burgyone at the Battle of Benington in August 16, 1777 were made up of members of the New Hampshire and Massachusetts militia men and members of the Green Mountain Boys who were led by General John Stark and Colonel Seth Warner. Burgyone ordered Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Baum to raid Benington to acquire supplies. Baum thought the town had only a few defenders but after a run-in with the rebels, he was enveloped by the rebels and was killed in battle. Reinforcements from sides joined the fight but managed to drive off the British forces.
