The Enlightenment in England had its roots in the English Civil War where the English came into conflict with the King Charles II. His excessive taxes angered the Parliament which led to war. Charles lost and later tried and executed. This gave rise to the Commonwealth governed by Oliver Cromwell. It influenced the Enlightenment because during period the rights of the common men were now being recognized and they more than just mere followers but had a right to voice their sentiments. Principles of freedom and rights became the focus of philosophers such as John Locke.
