Why did hammarabi have his laws engraved in stone and placed in a public place

    This was a very tactical move.

    1) this meant that his laws were known to everyone: this reminded the people that they had to obey the law and took away the excuse of "I didn't know".

    2) in a case of dispute, people could go to the stone and access the law: this made the legal disputes easier to settle.
