Note the three motives behind the European race for colonies

1) riches: Europeans hoped to gain a number of riches from their colonies, through the extraction of natural resources and through the production of goods there

2) new land to settle in: Europeans hoped to find a more fertile land to sellte in

3) bigger prestige in the eye's of other European nations.
