How did religious beliefs and dissent influence the new England colonies

Religious beliefs didn't just influence the colonies but where the means for which the colonies were created. These colonies were put in place by British pioneers who left everything behind in order to pursue religious freedom so one could say that religions beliefs are the reason why the colonies where even there in the first place.
