Which state split into two and why?

Kora there is a south and north also America there is a north and south

What about South Dakota and North Dakota? I think they split in to two because South Dakota had much more people and were more independent then the North so someone (sorry i dont remember the full name) named Porter had said to either make it a very large state or wait till theres enough people on both sides to split in two.
