New York is a city that keeps increasing in size and in population numbers due to immigration for various reasons. It is impossible to build small buildings now like it was possible in the past because people need somewhere to live, which is why skyscrapers are necessary, both for living and for businesses. There are not that many open areas because the land has to be used economically, but certain things like Central Park are protected by law. In order to improve transportation, things like subway stations were introduced with subway lines that would not obstruct the already cluttered traffic of normal New York streets.
