Why did Aztec civilization fall all at once to the Spanish, while the maya civilization took much longer to be conquered?

It can be due to geographic contrasts however the aztecs were a target for gold and rich land for harvest, whom died by european disease as well as the alienated weaponry which the aztecs feared. fun fact, they even worshipped the Spanish because of the spaniards shining helmets reflecting sunlight which the aztecs defined as them being the sun gods.
