Two important roles priests played during the American colonization were:

    a. built missions - due to the rule of the pope that Indians will not be considered as slaves and they will not take the role of such, priests took on paternalistic roles to educate and give knowledge to the indigenous over a span of 150 years.

    b. built French and Spanish settlements - as their knowledge and background from the studies of books and several ideologies widen, they were instructed to build schools and hospitals that would cater to the basic needs of their constituents.
