The definition of a metropolitan area is a densely populated geographic region which is an urban core and has less-densely populated regions surrounding it. These regions share infrastructure, industries and housing. The less densely-populated areas can include suburbs, towns and rural areas and these are all tied socio-economically with the urban core area.
