Qur'an literarily means "to recite" or "recitation" in Arabic. Some people argue that it specifically refers to the "act of reading" - that of the message of God as it is written in the Qur'an which was given to Muhammad from God.

The word comes from the verb " qaraʼa", which means to read or to recite
