The Boxer Rebellion began because the Chinese did not approve of foreigners in China. They found them to be a disruptive influence in their country. The problem was they used bad tactics such as assaulting foreigners and missionaries as well as attacking the foreign legations where the foreigners stay. This led to a military coalition that invaded China and quelled the rebellion.
