How did Athenians live a more varied lifestyle than Spartans?

Sparta was a main military power in Greece, all the focus was on military. In Athens, while the military was important, the arts, litiature, and philosophy where also highly valued, where in Sparta, these where considered wastefulness pastimes.

The Athenians lived a more unique and calm life style as to they learning was more rightfully chosen then going to war as to the spartans they learned how to fight from a young age so they could send them to war.
