    The Articles of Confederation was a loose constitution among the states that gave the majority of the power to the states. Under the Articles, the country was not very unified, because each state seemingly had its own separate laws. This made the national government dependent on the states, because the states had more power than the federal government. The Articles eventually gave way to the Constitution, what we have now, which is a strong federal government to which the states defer.
