Photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while cellular respiration adds carbon dioxide. Cellular respiration is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into ATP, and then release waste products which includes water and carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis is the process used by plants, algae and certain bacteria to harness energy from sunlight into chemical energy. Photosynthesis functions as a counterbalance to respiration; it takes in the carbon dioxide produced by all breathing organisms and reintroduces oxygen into the atmosphere.
