The factors that control whether a river is braided or meandering are the gradient level, the water speed and load. The greater the stream discharge and the gradient then the greater the erosion of the river. The faster the stream flows the higher its discharge and the greater the load that the stream can carry. These erosive factors such as gradient and discharge from meanders and braided systems affect the development of a river channel.
