    Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a major contributing factor for mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Cesarean birth before the onset of labor and/or rupture of membranes can greatly reduce the chance of transmitting the infection to the infant. Future pregnancies should be discussed and decided on an individual basis. Proper treatment of any open wounds and education should be provided to the mother to ensure she reduces the chance of transmitting HIV to her infant.
