There are a few symptoms that can show that the infant is developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), for example feeding intolerance or bloody stools. Initial symptoms are hard to notice and the earlier a baby is born, the signs of NEC will be seen later. Babies with NEC might also have increased gastric residuals and abdominal distension.
