A graduated cylinder also known as measuring cylinder is commonly used in laboratories to measure the volume of liquids. When a liquid is poured into the cylinder it forms a concave meniscus. The reading is measured by observing the value at the lower end of the meniscus. Graduated cylinder can only be used for liquids.

Graduated cylinder can also be used to find the volume of a solid through a method known as water displacement. When a solid is immersed in the water, the water level rises. The volume of the solid is equal to the change in the level of water.
