    The receptive vocabulary of the toddler is larger than the productive vocabulary.

    Just like that of an adult, or a student, the child's receptive vocabulary is much larger than her productive vocabulary We know lots of words (receptive) which for a variety of reasons, we simply do not use when we speak or write (productive).
