The term stimulus is also called impulse stimulare, means to goad, prod, or urge dies in Latin. This relates to stimulus because it provoke a compulsion to make an organism change its behavior. The urge relay a potential internal stimuli occurring in its own body to make a move. An example of this is hunger and thirst where the body send signals for a need of more energy and hydration. This causes human and animal to search for food and water.

A stimulus is an event or activity that can produce a physiologic response.

Same as your given meaning above, "to goad, urge or prod" is to induce or elicit a response from something. And just like the action of a stimulus, it can provoke a reaction. This can happen inside or outside of the body.
