The file snake, Acrochordus arafurae, is an aquatic, nocturnal snake native to northern Australia, Africa and New Guinea. They are about eight feet long, non venomous and live about nine years. Their population varies seasonally. During prolonged inundation of a floodplain, such as during the rainy season, they are plentiful.
