    This is possible because there are some organisms that cannot reproduce. One of the best examples I could give you is the mule. It is the offspring resulting from a cross between a male donkey and a female horse. Although a donkey and a horse can reproduce, a mule cannot reproduce because they are sterile, meaning they cannot produce sperm and egg cells, but it has all other factors of life.
