Due to the mucus in our nose we are not able to smell the odor and hence our brain is not able to tell us about the flavor of the dishes that we are having.

But when we a have cold, due to the mucus in our nose we are not able to smell the odor and hence our brain is not able to tell us about the flavor of the dishes that we are having. As a result we feel that our food tastes bland and we do not feel like having anything when we are sick.

Why do I lose my taste when I get a cold?

When we chew food, the aroma of the food travels to our nasal cavity. However, during a cold, mucus blocks this passage to the nasal cavity and in the absence of odor information, our brain cannot give us information about flavor, thus making everything taste bland.
