Chromosomes are arranged in pairs because one of each set of the two comes from each parent. We receive half our DNA from our mother (in the ovum) and the other half from our father (in the sperm). A normal human being will therefore have 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs. This is mainly done to achieve genetic variation.
