    Fatty acids with the odd number of carbons undergo same β-oxidation as the even number of carbon. But it generates Propionyl-CoA which is a three carbon molecule instead of Acetyl-CoA and Propionyl-CoA cannot be metaboliesd further in the body as Acetyl-CoA is.

    It is converted to Succinyl CoA which is a TCA intermediate and canbe metabolized. The process of conversion is:

    Propionyl-CoA is thus carboxylated with ATP and bicarbonate in the presence of enzyme, propionyl-CoA carboxylase to D-methylmalonyl-CoA. After that, D-methylmalonyl-CoA is then in the presence of methylmalonyl-CoA racemase is converted to the L-methylmalonyl-CoA. Lastly, L-methylmalonyl-CoA thus formed is converted to Succinyl-CoA by the enzyme, methylmalonyl-CoA mutase.
