What important role do unicellular organisms play in sustaining life on Earth?

    They are the decomposers, they break down all the dead and decaying matter on earth returning them to the environment so they can be used again. They are vital in the nitrogen cycle as they fix the inert nitrogen from the air into nitrates in the soil for plants to absorb, providing essential nutrients for the producers in the food chain to use.
