Angie mixes the fertilizer for her plants at the beginning of the week. She puts 40 g of the fertilizer-water solution in each of seven closed containers and uses one container each day to water her plant. One day, she goes outside to get a container and finds that the solution in it is frozen. How much mass should the frozen solution in the container have? A. 20 g B. 0 g C. 40 g D. 10 g

    Answer: 40 g.

    Justification:

    1) It is said that 40 g of the fertilizer-water solution is put in each container.

    2) Consideriing there is not evaporation, a balance of mass tells you that the mass in each container has not changed.

    3) Freezing is a physical change that does not involve exchange of mass with surroundings, so yet the mass balance indicates the each container has the same initial amount of fertilizer-water solution, which is 40g.
